Ryan Szarama, Lyle Mantooth, Mike O'Connor, Amye Scavarda, Damien Tournoud, and I recently met for two days in the San Fran af83 PariSoma office to begin planning an Ubercore initiative (think Ubercart and Small Core) for restructuring Ubercart on Drupal 7. The goals of Ubercore are to create a smaller core of essential Ubercart functionality (splitting other features into additional modules) with an excellent data structure and complete test coverage, and full integration with Views and Field API. The future of out-of-the-box ecommerce with Ubercart in D7, we believe, will be in the form of install profiles. At the planning meeting we discussed the current challenges and solutions, hashed out a development process, identified key functionality for Ubercore, created development guidelines, did some data structure planning, and worked on http://d7uc.org, the hub for organizing this development. Please join us at d7uc.org and #d7uc IRC on Freenode to get involved in (re)building the best open source ecommerce system. The first development sprint kicked off via IRC meeting on Monday October 26, and progress is underway. There is a lot of work to do, but it's a very exciting time. Please see Ryan's post for more info.
